eBay-owned (EBAY) Skype has certainly been the center of attention in the VOIP world. Not only did the Skype team release version 3.0 of their software client, but for the first time ever, the application registered over 8 million concurrent users.

Skype version 3.0 has some interesting new features including a refreshed interface design, public chats, browser extensions, Skypecast controls, and ability to add-on extras easily. Note that the version is still beta and will require some time to iron out all the features.

8 million users online is an important milestone. As Jean Mercier points out, it has taken 71 days to gain the last million users - one of the fastest million in Skype's history. Congrats to the Skype team on their continued growth.

In another positive piece of news for Skype, Google's (GOOG) "free collection of essential software" bundled in Google Pack now includes Skype. Skype therefore joins the likes of Google Earth, Picasa, Google Desktop and Mozilla Firefox marketed by Google. This is also particularly interesting given that Google Talk remains in the pack as well.
