  • Can Sterling Construction Turn Itself Around? Insiders Think So [View article]
Pretty cheap (http://bit.ly/GK0gwN ) on most metrics.

But keep in mind, one a firm goes negative on its earnings, it's really hard to compare valuation because in some sense, there's not floor or base case any more.

  • Are Insiders Buying Black Diamond Inc. To Turn It Into The Next Armor Holdings? [View article]
Got you on that one and have to agree. But they're also into climbing gear, backpacks, etc. SOMEWHERE it snowed, you know? That also speaks to the international thesis.

  • The Bank of Israel begins a pilot program, investing a portion of its fx reserves in U.S. equities, with the goal of ultimately putting 10% of its stash (currently $77B) in U.S. equity index trackers. UBS and BlackRock ("Be 100% in equities") will manage the funds.  [View news story]
WTF?? That'll probably end as well as the Arab and Asian sovereign wealth funds panned out. Betcha Citibank convinces Fisher to put a $1B or two in.

  • Wendy's: Why This Fast Casual Turnaround Story Has Insiders Buying [View article]
From the research I've read, this has been an ongoing concern as well. If you look at some of the investor presentations management has made so far this year(there's tons of good stuff here: http://bit.ly/wVK3b9 ) , there doesn't seem to be a commitment to breakfast.
More importantly, it seems the company is intent on not getting stuck in the middle of the market without a differentiated offering (either price or better food). Looks like they're choosing to move upwards (like Five Guys) rather than down (McD).

  • 2 Billionaire Brothers' Insider Buying At Colfax [View article]
I can't begin and wouldn't tell you what to do. I'm trying to bubble up ideas that the insider buying activity is positive on. What the stock does in the near future is anyone's guess.

The point here is using DHR as a model -- if the Rales can do anything close to that, it's a good story.

  • 2 Billionaire Brothers' Insider Buying At Colfax [View article]
    Hey Tom,
That may be so and ultimately, no one knows for sure whether a specific stock will go up but that wasn't my point. I saw two interesting trades made by guys with good track records.

My point was more at the strategy level -- mimicking certain investors (whether they're insiders or hedge funds) can work. A day's return isn't really all that significant.

  • The Insider Trading Anomaly: How to Make 7% More Than Index Funds [View article]
Agreed. In my book Tradestream your Way to Profits, I spend a whole chapter developing a strategy to take advantage of insider trading data (based upon Seyhun's Investing Intelligence).
I think inefficiencies persist because taking advantage of them requires a systematic strategy/approach to investing in them. Investors still try to outsmart the market and have a very hard time implementing a quantitative approach.
Joel Greenblatt was asked if he thought publicly publishing the magic formula (which he used to return 40% for 20 years) would somehow affect its results. He said he was confident that investors couldn't maintain a purely systematic approach. Same for insider trading.

Yes, definitely discuss that in the book -- but I don't provide a list of X people and say to follow them. So much depends on your style of investing and whether you chose to follow professionals or armchair investors.

  • Why Buy-Side Research Is Better Than Sell-Side Research [View article]
I feel like this content has always been a mainstay of SA but had gotten drowned out as of late from the sheer volume of articles. Great to highlight this kind of stuff -- really helps other investors piggybacking on pros (hedgies and other buy side analysts) with decision support.

good point. Consumer tech is growing faster than the infrastructure to support it. 2010 may be a year of catch up for the telecom/cable cos.
