That may be so and ultimately, no one knows for sure whether a specific stock will go up but that wasn't my point. I saw two interesting trades made by guys with good track records.
My point was more at the strategy level -- mimicking certain investors (whether they're insiders or hedge funds) can work. A day's return isn't really all that significant.

I think inefficiencies persist because taking advantage of them requires a systematic strategy/approach to investing in them. Investors still try to outsmart the market and have a very hard time implementing a quantitative approach.
Joel Greenblatt was asked if he thought publicly publishing the magic formula (which he used to return 40% for 20 years) would somehow affect its results. He said he was confident that investors couldn't maintain a purely systematic approach. Same for insider trading.
